With the closure of the large mental hospitals, there has been rise in the number of patients with learning disabilities
in the community in recent years. In addition, improved medical technology has led to increased life expectancy. As a
result, GP workload in caring for these patients has greatly increased and therefore GPs need support to improve their skills
and knowledge of the needs of this vulnerable group of patients.

With this in mind, the RCGP has organised a conference in London on Thursday 3 February. Dr Stephen Ladyman, MP
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, and Dame Denise Platt, Chair of the Commission for Social Care Inspection, will be
addressing delegates to encourage improved health outcomes for patients with physical and learning disabilities.
