New CIHI Data On Yukon Home Care Clients, Canada

New analysis from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) based on 2006-2007 data from the Yukon reveals that one third (33%) of informal caregivers of longer-term home care clients with high care needs expressed symptoms of caregiver burden; that's twice the rate of those caring for people with lower care needs (16%).

The report also showed that one quarter of Yukon home care clients were self-referred or referred by a family member. This highlights the important role of home care as a primary health care service that supports individuals and families in managing their care in the community.

The Yukon is the first jurisdiction to submit home care data to CIHI. Others are preparing to follow in support of high-quality and informed planning for the future of home care in Canada.
